Questions about VPS Hosting and Mailing

hi, I'm thinking about upgrading to vp from my reseller's account, but before i do that i got some questions for you...
1/I understood that with my reseller's account i can send max 500 emails per hour, what is the maximum with VP?

2/Is there an outside body upstream of HFW taht monitors mail traffic and could block it if I'm sending say 20.000 emails in a couple of hours? (I dont intend to spam, my mailing list is well targetted... but i might have 25 % that dont exist anymore.... can taht become a problem for my accout / for your server / for a third party that would brand me as spammer....) well... really that question means "what's the best way to make my mailing and stay in the norms?"

3/I have very often problem with file ownership being assigned to "nobody"... I've been told by some of your colleagues that this problem would disappear if I upgrade to VP... please reconfirm

4/I see in the VP package "Storage (+ 1GB free for OS)", what is that about?

5/I see Free Fantastico Deluxe for VPS but can't locate the list of propose apps in that package

6/my nameservers are ns1 and 2 .rootshosting.net, will they change? if yes, who operates the change? me or you?

7/What is better for me? use my own ns or hfw dns?

8/How long will it take for the upgrade? will my websites be offline for some time? if yes, how long?

9/will all my joomla apps be working after upgrade or is there much settings to change?

10/What does VPS stand for by the way ^_^? what's the main difference with my current account?

11/I actually dont need to upgrade now... i only do that for the mailing thing eventhough I intended to upgrade next year.... is there a way to send mailings of about 30000 and pay per mail or something... ^_~ just checking na... and if there is no way, then i need to upgrade

- There is no limit for amount of messages that you can send on VPS, but you should make sure that server is not overloading, because it can make problems for all other customers that are using the same node.

- If you have to send that much messages, it would be better not tosend it all at once. You should setup your mailing lists script to send messages in smaller packages, to prevent overlopads (sending 20k messages at once can cause really high loads on server)

> 3/I have very often problem with file ownership being assigned to "nobody"... I've been told by some of your colleagues that this problem would disappear if I upgrade to VP... please reconfirm

- Simple upgrade to VPS will not solve that issue by itself. Apache is working that way that if any file is created or uploaded through some script, file is owned by nobody (apache user). That can be resolved with installing SUPHP on server (we don't have it on our shared servers), and that way all scripts will run under user that owns it. Installing SUPHP would need some reconfiguration on some sites maybe, because it doesn't allow folders and files to be with 777 permissions, but it would provide higher level of security for server thatn running PHP without it.

> 4/I see in the VP package "Storage (+ 1GB free for OS)", what is that about?

- Each VPS is as standalone server, with it's own OS installed. So, we are providing 1GB of extra disk space, for OS, cPanel and any other installation.

> 5/I see Free Fantastico Deluxe for VPS but can't locate the list of propose apps in that package

- You can see list of Fantastico scripts here:
http://cpanel-host.com/fantastico/

> 6/my nameservers are ns1 and 2 .rootshosting.net, will they change? if yes, who operates the change? me or you?

- nameservers will stay the same, only IPs will have to change. We can configure nameservers with new IPs on VPs, but you will have to change that on registrar side on your own.

> 7/What is better for me? use my own ns or hfw dns?

- on VPS you must use your private nameservers, we do not provide using of our nameservers for VPS/dedicated owners

> 8/How long will it take for the upgrade? will my websites be offline for some time? if yes, how long?

- Here is a process of reseller --> VPS upgrade:
First you have to order new VPS package. When your VPS is ready (setup time would be 12 - 24 hours), you can contact our migration team (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), and they will move all your accounts from reseller to VPS. After migration is done, you can check if everything went well, and then you can change IPs of nameservers. when DNS propagates, and all domains start to resolve from VPS, you can cancel your old, reseller, account. There should be no downtime. Only dowentime can be caused by DNS propagation.

> 9/will all my joomla apps be working after upgrade or is there much settings to change?

- All applications should work the same after migration.

> 10/What does VPS stand for by the way ^_^? what's the main difference with my current account?

- VPS (Virtual Private Server) is as stand alone server, but you share hardware with other customers that have VPSes on the same node. It is working through Virtuozzo, virtualisation software. You share hardware and kernel from the same main node, but you have standalone OS with root access.

> 11/I actually dont need to upgrade now... i only do that for the mailing thing eventhough I intended to upgrade next year.... is there a way to send mailings of about 30000 and pay per mail or something... ^_~ just checking na... and if there is no way, then i need to upgrade

- Unfortunately, that mail sending limit can not be avoided in any way, because sending great amount of messages is causing high loads on server you are on, and making problems for all other customers on the same server.

Thanks for reply,
I have a couple of specifications to ask regarding your answers, I wrote them in ?CAPITAL letters below, underneath your answers
Thanks

? I DON'T MEAN TO SEND THEM ALL IN 1MN... BUT IT WOULD BE NICE IF I COULD GET RID OF THE JOB IN 5 HOURS INSTEAD OF 5 DAYS (I'm now sending at 240/h because i'm considering other domains users of mine plus mail errors, returns, replys... and system has to be reset now and then)

THAT WOULD MEAN 4000 PER HOUR DURING 5 HOURS NO MORE THAN ONCE PER WEEK (ONCE PER WEEK FOR A MONTH OR SO AND THEN ONCE PER MONTH MAX), AND I'D CLEANUP THE MAILING LIST EACH TIME SO THAT THERE'S NOT TOO MUCH BOUNCE BACK
WOULD THAT BE ACCEPTABLE?

Matthieu,

I DON'T MEAN TO SEND THEM ALL IN 1MN... BUT IT WOULD BE NICE IF I COULD GET RID OF THE JOB IN 5 HOURS INSTEAD OF 5 DAYS (I'm now sending at 240/h because i'm considering other domains users of mine plus mail errors, returns, replys... and system has to be reset now and then)

- Limit of 500 messages per hour doesn't refer to your reseller account, it is limit per hosting account. So, that limit is for every domain.
5000 messages per hour might be acceptable on VPS (but, I would suggest to make those packages even smaller. There should be option for that in mailing script available).

? BUT WHAT ABOUT THE APPLICATIONS THAT NEED SOME FILES TO RUN ON 777? BASIC APPS LIKE JOOMLA NEEDS SOME FILES TO RUN 777 TO BE ACCESSED FROM BACKEND... WOULD YOU SHOW ME HOW TO GO AROUND THAT?

- Joomla need some folders to be on 777 permissions because they must be available for nobody to write in. With suphp, just owner user will have to write in folder, and 755/644 permissions will be enough. Just, after suphp is installed, you will have to log in Joomla admin panel, and configure it to create fiolders with 755 and files with 644 permissions

? IF THE OLD ACCOUNT IS DUPLICATED AND THE NEW ACCOUNT PUT ONLINE WHILE THE OLD ONE STILL UP, THERE SHOULD BE AN INSTANT TRANSITION FOLLOWING THE PROPAGATION... WILL THAT BE THE CASE OR SHOULD I PREPARE TO WARN SOME PARTNERS?

- Transition should be instant, but the case is that IPs of nameservers and of all sites will be changed, and DNS need some time to propagate on all locations. That is done in few hours on most locations, but it can last up to 72 hours on some. It depends of registrar and local ISP DNS servers configuration.
