Setting Up VPS for Joomla and Making Migration, Tutorial and Advises

Hi,

Now migration of all websites is made and I have several problems that I'd like to ask you advise with.

I hope somebody can bear with me for final VPS setup to have my websites work 100% as they were on shared.

1st and main problem I have is: eventhough suexec is installed

(if I understood you properly suexec allow me to work joomla with folder755 file644),

I still have many scripts that can't function properly with folder755 file644, most of them require 777 still...

I appears that this issue affects mainly galleries but other scripts as well.

Sample pages in attachements

1. Please tell me what setting I should use in order to have this work properly (it is the major point you used to convince me to upgrade to VPS ^_^)

2. Also, if you choose to help me with this ticket (and there may be a couple of minor issues as well), is it possible to have the same person reply to me each time, it's ok if I wait periods of 3 days (I'm building a serious website now and this is the time I set the server right)

As I am able to see, mod_suphp was installed, but it is disabled in Apache config now.

If you like, I can enable it. Please notice that suPHP does not allow any directory to be setup with 777 permissions.

SUPHP is now enabled on your server.

I've noticed that Apache started throwing errors for one account:

Sat May 24 04:57:04 2008] [alert] [client 74.6.16.168] /home/hotelato/public_html/.htaccess: Invalid command 'php_flag', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

With suPHP enabled you can not use php_flag and php_value handlers in .htaccess.

I had to disable "#php_admin_flag safe_mode off" from www.cambodia.bookhostelbook.com VHost entry, it was blocking Apache from starting.

I had problems to enable suPHP module properly.

suPHP is now disabled and enabled normal php4 and php5 modules. We will have to investigate this more further.

I am moving ticket to Level3 for further investigation.

Greetings Mr. Stas

I'm checking websites now and need to ask you a big question that is not of your responsibility but is major for me, I hope you can answer.

as you told me, I can't use php_flag anymore in my .htaccess

but joomla needs to use flag to register globals off... if not ther'es a security problem...

my question is:

what should I do... or maybe there's nothing to do if server's settings made joomla secured without that flag...

Hi,

looks like previous issues are all cleared, thanks.

now i'm having 2 problems with VPS and they both concern cpanel:

1. when editing files from cpanel's file manager the window is now very very small and gives only 2 lines of the page to scroll, making it about impossible to work. I tried on several websites and have the same problem2. fantastico deluxe & joomla upgrade... I seem to remember that there was an option for automatic upgrade to joomla 1.5 and that option isnt' there anymore... do you know about that? is it only an option for shared accounts or for rvblue skin?

not sure about Fantastico - it's upgraded fresh.

Please switch the account to use x3 skin, as you don't have the rvSkin installed to update rv* skins, and x3 does display the Joomla upgrade link, at least when cPanel entered through WHM - pls. see heywakeupman.com account for example.

In x3 you also have the option to use the new file manager (recommended) or legacy, old filemanager (not so recommended).

issue was solved indeed but now it's back to bad:

www.reggaeguesthouse.com opens but all internal links don't work and ask to download

www.bookhostelbook.com doesn't open and proposes to download

www.hotel-crans-montana.com shows an older version online than the actual page

now I think i can identify the problem:

www.reggaeguesthouse and www.bookhostelbook have old forwards that I can't seem to be able to remove, not even from whm, because they used to be addon domains on shared. I'm refused access now

www.hotel-crans-montana, on shared, used to receive a wildcard forward from www.hotel-montpaisible.ch/ENG/ but as per now I can see no trace of it nowhere

Could you remove the addon/subdomain settings for reggaeguesthouse and bookhostelbook under rootsreggaeclub.com please (because it's not working from my interface)

sorry for the capital letter thing... my bad... but I was mentionning that to you because i remember that it was a setting under shared that is probably giving the current problem... I thought you'd be able to find it because it's not appearing on whm... so I repeat: I suspect that the problem we've had for several days with hotel-crans-montana.com is coming from an old wildcard fwd from hotel-montpaisible.ch/eng/ -----> hotel-crans-montana.com

could you please help find out where are the remains of that fwd and remove them please

hi again

thank you but almost nothing has changed...

I'm starting to lose hope

I dont' understand what can cause these malfunctions...

reggaeguesthouse does not allow php include functions in htm pages

bookhostelbook doesn't open and asks to download page

hotel-crans-montana.com does not allow php include function in htm pages (and some pages are ok)

I thought that'd be from old forwards and addons... obviously not

but these 3 websites used to be ok last week

now they are not while I didn't change anything in the script

don't you get a popup for download when you open bookhostelbook for exemple? How can that be?

Kindly

as per now

reggaeguesthouse.com behaviour:

on IE, when on main url, intnernal links open but the php include doesn't work (see http://www.reggaeguesthouse.com/links2.htm)

on FF (and site is allowed in security options), internal links dont' work at all and propose download of page instead of opening them

bookhostelbook.com

IE and FF don't work, propose to download page

hotel-crans-montana.com

IE and FF: main url doesnt' seem to display changes... whatever I update on server, main index.htm keeps on displaying an old version of the file, even on computers that never opened this website... like if page was cached somewhere

other pages are fine and menu works... only index looks stubborn to update...

most peculiar behaviour, I dont' knwo what to do

Hi, This is crazy... :S please take time to read my confusionjust when you said tht bookhostelbook opened I tried and it WORKEDthen I restarted firefox and it DIDNT WORK ANYMORE and gave me that page again (see attachement)... so i can't check IP because page doesn't open at all...

please belive me, there is really a problem, even if most of the times website opens for you... and usually after it opens for you it opens for me... for a while... and not anymore I don't know what to say to give you a hint about the situation

what I noticed:

I have 3 issues affecting differently and not constantly 3 sites, this started several days ago, I think after installation of suphp module

issues: -page not open and ask download

-some specific pages: I modify pages and the old version shows online long after, even if there's no proxy here and I clear all data from browser (even on 1st visit from new pc)... once again, after you say you see the page right, I also see the page right for a while, then not anymore

-php command not accepted even after .htaccess modified

Please note that webiste hotel-montpaisible.ch which is very similar to hotel-crans-montana.com has lines AddHandler x-httpd-php .htm AND AddType application/x-httpd-php .htm and is working fine... (which means that it's not addhandler command that was giving problem as thought yesterday)

sites: at migration time these 3 sites are my only sites being the target of forwards, 2 as addons and hotel-crans-montana.com as folder wildcard redirect from hotel-montpaisible.ch...

That's all the patterns I noticed so far...

there's no proxy hereI propose that, if you also have no clue about the issue today, I wait 24 hours and make a report again tomorrow.

I confirm, ALL WEBSITES OPEN PROPERLY NOW, even the joomla install problem from the other thicket, the joomla install was working now, without me re-installing... it just was all good

beats me really

Thanks a lot for your patience

Have you changed IP for securehotelbooking.com?

Could you please try to ping it and check which IP is it resolving from. You would see that cPanel page if domain is pointing to other IP than account is assigned with.

Domain is opening fine on my end, opening Joomla page.

Hi,

I'm contacting the ISP ...

It's good you changed IP for securehotelbooking.com, I had to do it anyway.

can I ask you to assign IP 66.225.216.127 to securehotelbooking so it's done...

for the current problem I will wait 48 hours and report on status because for now we all have lost too much time.

hi,

Dear Mr Tom H,

sorry but I can't wait 48 hours to report on this ticket for issues are very strange indeed...

hotel-crans-montana.ch started to work normally (I have not changed anything)

bookhostelbook.com opens normally if http//:bookhostelbook.com but if using "www" it will not open

but the biggest worry comes from www.securehotelbooking.com.

yesterday I left it with folders 755 and files 644 in top 3 levels of hotelboo's public_html and when I came this morning many files chmod have changed to 000 and 200... it's impossible that I did that myself, even if making a mistake...

I'm 100% sure that the files chmod have changed by themselves, I checked yesterday before I left and then closed my machine, nobody can have come and played a joke on me.... and ssh reports that nobody logged in since I did last night

I hope that proves to you that there's a serious problem with the VPS

What to do next?

Kindly

Hi,

About http://securehotelbooking.com/

There was unsecured permissions on public_html folder. should be 750:

drwxr-xr-x 7 hotelboo hotelboo 1024 May 29 08:48 tmp

lrwxrwxrwx 1 hotelboo hotelboo 11 May 29 06:31 www -> public_html

I can't answer what changed permissions, I've set 644 for all files and 755 for folders in public_html directory, now site is opening fine.

Both http://www.bookhostelbook.com/ and http://bookhostelbook.com/ opening fine.

I'm recommending you to use NSes of http://opendns.org/ project. It's really fast, stable and always answering properly.

hi,

Thanks for the advise for http://opendns.org/ mr. Stas, I'm looking into it and try to understand what' it's about.

nevertheless it seems that my scripts and my VPS have been corrupt and tht no security settings/modules we have implemented has been able to secure my system/websites.

I think I should make all my websites from scratch again on a new VPS

What do you think?

how could we do that (I still have an unused shared account) ?

how much would it cost (I'd need an ultra-secured custom VPS setup ready before I re-make the websites)?

is support is ready to bear the making with me or only troubleshoot when the problem is already inside?

Sorry, you must understand that I can't work seriously with the current status of my hosting account, it's just not working... if I want to continue to work with HFW it must be in good conditions

Hello,

I could set secured permissions\owner on all accounts data on your VPS for you.

You have installed php 4.4.8 and I should notice you that php4 it not supported by php team any more. php4 - dead language and I'm recommending to update to 5.2.6.

hi,

yes, of course... whatever you say... let's go ahead.

but for permissions and autorizations, I think we're beyond that now, some people are able to come in and change that somehow.

listen, and i hope my word goes to a manager or a decision maker of some kind.

I've upgraded to vps for more security, more stability because I'm working on a big (for me) project and because I need to run very secure joomla websites.

I think that the problem we have now is that we migrated very unsecure websites on a new VPS with no specific(as far as I know) security and it stayed that way about 2 weeks before I understood what happened (and recources went running over 100% on all counts)

there's no doubt now that not ony my scripts have been compromised but apparently the server as well.

It's all my fault, I didnt' know about these things and I'm learning slow but learning

I'm not going to another host unless you tell me that u've had enough of me, but I have about 20 webistes registered or hosted with you and it's time to set the whole thing right.

but vps's corrupt, i'm pretty sure of that.

What will it take to start all over again?

as I said I'm ready to reconstruct all my webisites but you have to give me a confirmed safe and proof environnement first

if you think that yes, then what?

if you think that no, then what?

yes, this is our ip

the thing is that the site has run for so long on shared and for a while on unprotected vps and I think that maybe some scripts are already there that allow people to come in and out the way they want

I could be wrong but the overall behaviour is too dodgy to be clean

what would be the procedure to re-install vps with all required security modules and settings?

On my side I'd have to re-do or clean many pages or sites

As I see, security on your VPS is configured. You have suPHP, mod_security is installed.

If there is some leak in scripts security, moving accounts on new VPS will not help.

Account hotelboo was accessed only from your IP. I see that some files were modified via cPanel File Manager.

We could build new VPs for you, but I am not sure would it help, this doesn't looks like server side issue to me.

Was anything edited on that account via Web (not cPanel)?

hi,

no, nothing on hotelboo has been edited by web.

yesterday I deleted account and re-created it with dedicated IP, installed a pretty secured extension (jomres), secured permissions and went to bed

this morning the website was down because permissions were all over the place (its' actually showing apache install page on main url from here :( probably not for you... but here i see a green screen while it opens from correct IP)

Nobody knows what's going on

I think in such case it'd be wise to re-install VPS and pack it up with security things then reload the websites 1 by 1 after checking pages or re-installing scripts

If i'm correct and that some people have taken advantage of the lack of security at first vps install then we should re-install

Is there any tool that could inspect scripts for possible harmful lines?Waiting for your guidance

Kindly

Posted On: 30 May 2008 03:16 AM

Unfortunately, we can't scan scripts for "harmful" lines.

We can scan your VPs with rkhunter to see if there are any rootkits installed maybe.

for moving, we would have to create brand new VPS for you, and move all accounts (if you want to move accounts and data).

If you don't want to move anything from server, we can completely clean this VPs, and install it from scratch.

hi,

I think it's necessary to re-install all...

we could maybe:

move all back to shared account (if it's still standing)

re-create the VPS

install a world of security things on it

and I could start to put back sites on it 1 by 1, or re-create them 1 by 1 when possible and watch carefully site after site if some evil script is copied (you could give me procedures for it) because I'd need to keep databases anyway... (can evil scripts be run from database? if yes i'm f*#!ed)

I don't mind losing time but I must be fully secured before 2 weeks

What do you think?

Hi,

Thanks a lot

you probably know more than me but I think the best way would be to

-make a backup of each website (database and public_html) and check integrity (i have problems downloading clean backups from here apparently)

-re-syncronize all that's on VPS to the shared

-keep ns1 and ns2.rootshosting.net on the VPS

-assign some of your dns to the shared so I can just repatriate them to VPS by re-assigning my dns without disturbing you each time

-have the VPS re-setup with all current security modules and settings (and more if there is)

-Do you think you could help me configuring some custom daily cron jobs such as running some anti-evilware or things i don't know :S

-I will download the backups from the location you give me and inspect files but most joomla installs I'll make from scratch. I may keep a couple of customer's websites on shared as well.

and I got a couple of questions please

-Is there a tool to run on a database and identify evil script?

-how long do I have left on my shared please? -please do you have a security geek in your team who could setup a special Joomla Vps? (90% of my active script is joomla based)-is there way to get the hfw support agent manual ... there's got to be some manual that's specific to your system, that gives standard useful ssh commands you use, list of all logs and all tools available to use and how to... looks like I need to learn that system

much work ahead

Hello,

If you want to use the hfwdomains.com DNS, you would login to hfwdomains.com and change it to:

"Use Our Name Servers"

You can then adjust the A and MX Records at hfwdomains to point to the IP you need it to.

However, a better method would be to keep the name servers as:

ns1.yourdomain.com

ns2.yourdomain.com

Then, you can just change the name server "IP's" at hfwdomains.com when needed.

The name server IP's for our reseller plans are:

NS1 - 66.225.217.10

NS2 - 69.61.12.101

Thanks.

Hi hosting ,

Just to confirm. You would need all sites to be migrated back from VPS to reseller. And, you would need that sites on reseller use our nameservers, so you can change nameservers for each domain separately.

The easiest way for doing it would be to create WHM full account backups for each account, copy it to shared server, and restore backups there, so all will have latest data.

please confirm, and I'll continue with that.

I prefer he handles the re-construction of the VPS rather than several persons involve and i never know what's really done

So I can wait for Tom unless he's to return in more than 48 hours

Hi hosting ,

I had to edit DNS zones for few more domains on shared server, they still had your nameservers assigned on server side.

Some of your domains still have your private nameservers on registrar side too:

cransmontanahotel.ch

hotel-happenings.com

hotel-montpaisible.ch

hotelreferences.com - ns1/ns2.rootshosting.net.

And, there are 2 domains that still have some old nameservers on registrar side:

delaforet.ch

hotel-delaforet.ch - ns1/ns2.swisscenter.com.

All other domains should point to shared server shortly.

Please, check that everything is moved properly. After you confirm, we can rebuild VPS from scratch, and install everything that you would need on it.

hi,

for nameservers it's all good, some sites can go offline for now

delaforet.ch and hotel-delaforet.ch are hosted somewhere else now, no problem

of all the websites you listed only hotel-montpaisible.ch is important and I adjusted the dns already.

for VPS:

I noticed last time that problems increased when we put mod_suphp ... maybe because some clandestine scripts needed it to activate themselves...

which is not a problem because i'm only going to host new sites on VPS

I see that several hosting companies propose "special hosting setup for joomla"... I wish I knew what they know...

I'm looking on forums and things to know what's the most secure way to run joomla but I got to tell you that It's difficult for me to recognise critical information from useless one...

I'm still looking into it but you probably know what to do already...

What would you do?

Hi again,

It's difficult to separate exactly what setting can come from server and which i can impliment myself...

also there are probably other modules that can be installed on server in order to increase security...

the most complete doc I had to read so far is:

http://help.joomla.org/component/option,com_easyfaq/task,cat/catid,226/Itemid,99999999/

I also read somewhere that:

* Safe Mode Must be off

* Register_globals Must be off

I'm not sure what's the best setup really...

also it looks like the settings of modsecurity can be tricky...

I'll need input from you really...

Ensure that all configurable paths to writable directories (document repositories, image galleries, caches) are outside of public_html. Best plan is to make sure open_basedir is properly set for all the user accounts on your server. Check with your host if unsure.

Once your site is configured and stable, write-protect directories and files by changing directory permissions to 755, and file permissions to 644. There is a feature in Site --> Global Configuration --> Server to set all folder and file permissions at once. Test third party extensions afterwards, and carefully review the code of any extension that has trouble with such settings. safe_mode is off by default on newly installed VPSes (if it's not, we can disable it). Register_globals should also be off. Some scripts require register_globals to be set On, but that can be done using .htaccess (or custom php.ini in account's home direcotry).

modsecurity can be even little to0 hardened, and it can block a lot of regular requests. We have our own custom mod_security configuration, with some things disabled in it. It's still blocking most of known exploit attemtpts.

We can setup everything on your server (disabled register_globals and remote includes, install suPHP and mod_security). And, it would be great not to migrate accounts from shared back to dedicated. It would probably be better to install all scripts from scratch, and to copy only data and databases. When Joomla is installed under suPHP, all permissions should automatically properly. Joomla config chould be changed later, to create all new files and dirs with proper permissions (755 for directories and 644 for files).

And, you should always check that you are using latest version of Joomla, with all security patches.

Some more security modules can be enabled on VPs (cPhulk to block brute force attempts, we can change SSH port...).

However, most part of security is on scripts themselves.

hi,

thanks if you can do all that and other things that you think about of course

I won't migrate back for sure, I learnt my lessons

for my scripts, i'm reading about that right now and will be careful for sure

now, I noticed that on my old accounts somebody had been able to insert some phpinfo files (and I think I know who)

if that person has info about the old vps, is that going to be any good to him with the new one?

and for the vps setup, please do the maximum you think is possible and could be necessary.

if you make me the detailed list of implementations I'll keep it on the side and refer to it when a problem comes up

hosting ,

I remember that I've added test.php php_info file on one of your account. I am sorry if that file left there.

If you think that someone else have access to your VPS, you can setup new root password as soon as your VPS is rebuilt.

Just to confirm, you would like VPS to be build from scratch, right?

If so, I will move ticket to billing department for rebuild. Or, maybe even better, we could create new ticket fpor that. This ticket have large number of replies already, it could cause confuse.

We can start new ticket for VPS rebuild, and install everything on it after it's build.

HI,

-yes, I confirm, please re-install VPS from scratch

-also, for the phpinfo file, I found 2 already, so it's not only you (I remember a dodgy "friend" developper put one and didnt take it out) and there could be more

-we can open another ticket for building the vps but I'd like if possible that somebody flexible handles the configuration from beginning to end

- I'm reading about joomla security and there seems to be a great deal of configuration on server side... looks like I'll need somebody from HFW who's got interest to look into it and will be willing to spend time studying the case with me (if you see what other hosting companies do for joomla customers I think it's in the interest of HFW to take time implementing it)

- as far as I can see thre are a great deal of configurations and settings with PHP.ini / modsecurity / open_basedir / phpsuexec,php_suexec,suphp / mod_rewrite / mod_security(*) / mysql accounts access / php safe_mode (to avoid) / tripwire, samhain / ... and more, I'm still reading ...

these are things I'm nt yet able to control myself :(

other .htaccess safety settings I think i can do myself when installing joomla...

so yes, you have free hand to start re-building vps from scratch now

and once again, I hope you can really involve in the setup of the security

Thanks a lot

The major thing here is that Joomla is not too secure CMS by itself. Using suPHP, setting Joomla upload directories to 755 and securing it with .htaccess (we can block any harmful scripts for being uploaded and executed from there) should do the job. And, of course, keeping Joomla on latest versions all the time.

We will also install mod_security too.

If you would need anything other to be configured, please just send us what you need, and we will do that.

So, if you need VPS rebuild, I think that best thing would be that I open new ticket for that, add note what should be done on server after it's installed, and after all that is done, you can start moving accounts there one by one.

(I hope that when you say that joomla is not too secure by itself you mean that joomla is more subject to hacks because it's much more used than any other cms and mostly used by dummies lke me because it's so easy to install and operate (I dont need an answer on that ^_^)

hi,

Problem appeared when on VPS but now still spreads while on shared

We noticed problems starting about a week ago on:

www.bookhostelbook.com (used to ask for download file and now shows apache page)

www.hotel-montpaisible.ch (used to be ok but gives download option since ... today... last night i uploaded things through ftp)

www.hotel-crans-montana.com (asks for file download... since one day after i worded on it ... through ftp)

www.securehotelbooking.com (was giving apache page but now displays normally)

basically websites status change and it APPEARS that it's after I work on them from ftp or cpanel

it's not from server

I'm off the proxy here in cambodia

they also confirm the same problems from switzerland

you probably will tell me that you see them normally

----> problem comes from DNS???

there used to be loads of subdomains there but they dont' show anymore from cpanel

I tried to re-create them but I get the error message that they exist already... i guess that it's because this website used to be an addon of rootsreggaeclub.com...

but they don't show on rootsreggaeclub either...

so what should I do...

hi,

very strange issue indeed:

reggaeguesthouse.com USED TO be addon of rootsreggaelub.com

some time ago I re-created an independent account for reggaeguesthouse.com

today I removed the folder reggaeguesthouse from rootsreggaeclub.com

when I did that the site reggaeguesthouse.com went down and in whm of my shared account it says that :

reggaeguesthouse.com MISSING guesthou

please note that username is guesthou and NOT reggae(which is username of rootsreggaeclub)

... so... 2 things:

1/ how can I solve that issue?

2/ could you reload latest backup of guesthou account (without reloading rootsreggaeclub.com)

we should start thinking about making the final migration of accounts to your VPS, this is just causing confusion and further issues.

hi,

for the time being I'm thinking of keeping both shared and VPS because I need maximum security on account securehotelbooking... so I may keep that account alone on VPS... this is my plan for now... sorry...

I understand confusion but I don't understand why there is still some mix-up with both accounts that used to be addons of rootsreggaeclub and were split quite some time ago...

whether on vps or shared it's not normal that deleting a folder from reggae account would erase the guesthou account...

and it's on shared that i need the guesthou account backed up... VPS is only for hotelbo for the time being

please note that I logged in using the username guesthou... but account still shows rootsreggaeclub.com

That's not a major problem, but I'm having difficulties with some scripts on this domain so I have to straighten it
