Spam control from cpanel

my customer have noticed that since we're on the new server they get more spam than when we were on teh shared

are there some settings from the shared servers that we ought to implement in server.rootshosting.net and server.securehotelbooking.net in order to make them more spam proof... at least like the shared?

Kindly

Greetings

The reason you are getting more spam is because on the shared server your accounts where part of our mx gateway. Where now, your own server is showing up as part of the gate way.

There are however some security measures you can take in order to try to limit the amount of spam traffic your getting.

In whm

whm>>security center>> click the box smtp tweak enabled

whm>>tweak settings>> default catchall set to fail.

whm>>Service Configuration>>Exim Configuration Editor and add... in advanced settings, in the first box

#**#

#**# HostForWeb Extended Logging Begin

#**#

log_selector = +all -ident_timeout -host_lookup_failed -lost_incoming_connection

#**#

#**# HostForWeb Extended Logging End

#**#

#**#

#**# HostForWeb Relay Hardening Begin

#**#

# hostlist relay_hosts = lsearch;/etc/relayhosts : \

# localhost

hostlist relay_hosts = 127.0.0.1

hostlist relay_from_hosts = 127.0.0.1

hostlist auth_relay_hosts = *

#**#

#**# HostForWeb Relay Hardening End

#**#

In addition to limiting the amount of spam traffic you get, these are also security settings that can and should be added in order to keep your server from being able to be used as a relay point for spammers. You should also create spf records ( witch can be generated at openspf.org ) also you may want to set ptr ( rdns ) records for all of your serves shared ip addresses ( to the host names ) and their dedicated ip addresses, ( to the domains those ip addresses host ), for these, supply us with a listing and we will create them for you.

hi,

thanks for all this info about mail protection

I'm still looking into spf records and ptr ( rdns ) records

but my customer is still very upset, he's gettting about 140 spam a day now, Vs less than 40 when on shared...

you told me that the reason was that we're not part of the mx gateway anymore... :(

nevertheless isnt' there a way to have my mail traffic monitored by hfw tools as well, just like when I was on mx gateway?

Hello,

You should also enable RBL protection on your server and convert the catchalls to :fail: if they're already set up to something different.

If you provide your root password we can do this for you.

hi,

thanks

if you're talking about " Default catch-all/default address behavior for new accounts. "fail" is usually the best choice if you are getting mail attacks."

it's already set to FAIL

If its already set to fail thats fine. The only other thing you can really setup on the account is to enable spam assassian and to 'lower' his spam score. The lower the number in the customers spamscore the stricter the policies his filter will use to block spam.

hi,

thanks a lot

but in spam assassin it says: (Note: 5 is the default setting. The higher the number, the more conservative the setting.)

so I'm not sure if I should put higher or lower... sorry
